Radar Alert: Producers Worth The Mention

Novices often credit the artiste, and the artiste alone but real connoisseurs of music understand the genius that is the producer. Tasked with the responsibility of laying the foundation of any piece of music, producers create the sound that guides us through our sonic experience. Thus, if an artiste is the painter, then the producer is the canvas upon which the masterpiece is created. Let’s take a look at a few producers worth the mention.

El Guincho is widely known for his work with fellow Spanish singer and songwriter, Rosalía, on her hit track Malamente. However, this multidisciplinary artiste proves to be well versed in his craft; creating a mesh of melodies that results in a completely refreshing yet regal sound. This is especially apparent in songs like Dilemme and Solo which he produced for up coming Belgian-Congolese musician, Lous and the Yakuza, whose album is set to drop in the summer.

J Moon aka Jay Mooncie, is personally one of my favorite new age producers. Known for working extensively with London based artiste Col3trane, this producer’s features also includes other contemporary R&B and Pop type singers such as Joy Crookes, Dua Lipa, and DCKWRTH. His stylistic approach to music makes for an almost psychedelic kaleidoscope of sounds as heard in tracks like Penelope and Heroine (Col3trane).

Aluku Timothy, otherwise known as Altims, is an accomplished Nigerian producer and Dj signed to Mavin Records. His ability to fuse otherwise opposing sounds together, is apparent in tracks like Boulevard which he produced for Rema. The song offers the modernity of new age rap, whilst still highlighting a subtle local undertone to it. His catalog also includes Afro-pop artistes like Reekado Banks and Korede Bello.

Grammy winning producer, Angel Lopez, is all too familiar with crafting sounds for artistes of varying genres. His list of credits and features includes renowned musicians such as Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Bad Bunny, and Kehlani to name a few. Even so, its Lopez’s recent tracks with Ohio native rapper, Trippie Redd,  that truly cements his musical prowess in my mind. On Who Needs Love, Lopez offers a somewhat acoustic heartbreak melody that is paired seamlessly with Trippie’s slurry and emotive lyrics.

Odunsi (The Engine) is an emerging Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer whose sound can simply be described as eclectic. At only 23, Odunsi proves to be a self-assured artiste, releasing bodies of works that gradually peels off his many layers. Following his debut album, Rare, Odunsi just dropped an ep titled Everything You Heard Is True which only further solidifies his sonic expertise as well as versatility.
