At just the age of 16, Charlotte native VonFrmSkrilla is ready to take on the rap game and break through from his hometown. Through his music, he tells his true story of his upbringing and the trials and tribulations he’s experienced in his life.

His musical career has soared this year and he has gotten more attention after his last EP Da Big Whoop was released in September. I had the pleasure of speaking to him on the phone and asked him a couple of questions to get to know the artist behind the music.

LS: Where are you from?

V: I’m from Charlotte, North Carolina specifically Shady Oak Trail and that’s how I got my name “FrmSkrilla.”

LS: When did you start making music?

V: I’ve been rapping since I was a child but I didn’t start taking it seriously until this year. Realizing I had been born with this talent made me want to pursue music even more.

LS: When did you realize music was for you?

V: I knew rapping was meant for me as a child when I realized I could freestyle a whole beat. I would always tell myself that I would grow up and become a rapper but it wasn’t until this year that I fully started pursuing it.

LS: How did you get discovered?

V: My manager heard me rapping back in Charlotte and saw potential in me. He also watched a video that I featured in and he felt that my energy and flow made the song.

LS: What makes you different from other artists?

V: I’m authentic. Many artists these days aren’t authentic and what sets me apart from other rappers is everything that I’ve ever rapped about, I’ve actually experienced.

Whatever I go through at the moment is what I speak on. Other artists don’t really influence my music, I influence myself and I have my own distinct sound and my own unique and original flow.

LS: What is your creative process like?

V: I write all my rap songs but I also freestyle most of them. I like to be in the studio with the lights off so I can concentrate and start freestyling and flowing.

LS: What artists do you look up to?

V: I look up to NBA YoungBoy and Lil C Jay Casino because we have a similar story.

LS: What do you hope to get out of your involvement in the music industry?

V: Like Lil Baby says, I wanna “play for keeps.” I want to be someone big and influential in the music industry and I don’t want to only be in it for the money.

I also want to make more connections and expand my music. My biggest career goal right now is to hit a million views and to collaborate with a big artist. My life goal is to monetize off my music and give back to my family, especially my mom.

LS: What would you tell yourself 5 years from now?

V: 5 years from now, I would tell myself to keep pushing. Even if I blow up, stay true to myself and my craft. Don’t get lost in the fame or money.

LS: What’s your latest project and do you have any upcoming projects?

V: My latest EP is called Da Big Whoop and I’m releasing a new music video this week.

LS: So you were just in New York. How was your experience there?

V: New york really taught me how to move smarter. I used to do a lot of dumb shit back home so it really opened my mind to keep my head straight and keep hustling for my music career.

It’s so different from home. Everything is so accessible out there. Manhattan and Times Square were my favorite part of New York because people are always out at all times. It was eye opening and taught me that there is so much more to life.

The hussle and the fast pace out there is very motivating.

LS: How’s the music going along?

V: It’s going great, I actually met a lot of artists out in New York and I worked on a lot of new projects that are coming out soon. I have a new music video for ‘Who Shot Ya!’ coming out this week.

It’s one of my best videos so far. It was shot around New York in SOHO, Harlem, Brooklyn, 42nd and the Bronx. I freestyled the song right when I landed in New York. I was going through a lot at the time and I had a lot of anger, energy and passion that night which I let out in the studio.

LS: Where are you currently residing and what’s next for you?

V: I’m currently back home and I’m flying out to Atlanta tomorrow. I’m moving to Los Angeles, California in a few months to keep pursuing my music career. I’m different from a lot of artists.

It takes a long time for some of them to make it in this industry and I feel that I’m destined to blow up at a young age.
